August 14, 1919 – December 13, 2015

Mr. W. Carl Shetler, 96, a resident of Hearthstone Retirement Home, Waynesboro, and formerly of Reynolds Ave., Mont Alto, PA, died Sunday morning, December 13, 2015, in the retirement home. Born August 14, 1919 in Chambersburg, he was the son of the late Harry B. and Ruth M. (Carl) Shetler. He was born and raised on the family farm in Guilford Township until the age of 20. He and his wife, the late Helen P. (Wagaman) Shetler, were married on April 24, 1940 in Reformed Church Parish, Marion, PA, by the Rev. John C. Sanders. They lived in the Waynesboro area until moving to Reynolds Ave. in 1964. Mrs. Shetler died on June 30, 2007. In his early life, Mr. Shetler worked at Frick Company, Landis Tool Company, and Waynesboro Orchards Company, all of Waynesboro. He returned to Landis Tool Company in 1951 as an electrician, retiring on February 28, 1982. He also worked as a self-employed electrician. He was a lifelong member of The Reformed Church, which is currently Solomon’s United Church of Christ, where he served on the church board for many years. He also served the church as an Elder, Deacon, and various committees within the church. He was also a member of Acacia Lodge #586 F.&A.M., Harrisburg Consistory, Zembo Shrine, South Penn Scottish Rite Club, Franklin County Shrine Club, a life member of Mont Alto Volunteer Fire Company, “Over the Hill” Ambulance Crew of Mont Alto, South Chapter #2977 AARP, and the National AARP. Mr. Shetler was also proud to transport children to the Shriner’s Hospital in Philadelphia and to sing with the Southern Aires. Following his retirement, he and his wife delivered meals on wheels for over five years for the Mont Alto Senior Center and helped as a substitute for many additional years. They also loved to travel, bowl, play golf, and play cards with their friends. He is survived by one daughter, Betty Jane Shafer of Mercersburg, PA; two sons, William C. Shetler, Jr. and Dennis W. Shetler, both of Waynesboro; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Ellen Keller; and one brother, Glenn Harry Shetler.
